Ceremonial opening of parliament today

The ceremonial opening of Parliament is scheduled to get underway this morning at 11 o'clock.

Members of the House of Representatives will join their colleagues in the Senate to mark the occasion, which is usually coloured with pomp and pageantry.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen will present the Throne Speech setting out the Government's agenda for the new legislative year, as well as the administration's plans for the fiscal year.

The 2015/ 2016 fiscal year begins on April 1.

Finance Minister, Dr Peter Phillips will table the Estimates of Expenditure later today.

He will open the budget debate on March 12.

On March 17, Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Audley Shaw will make his presentation with Opposition Leader, Andrew Holness making his on March 19.

Holness will he’ll be followed by Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller on March 24.

Phillips will close the debate on March 25.

With the enactment of new Fiscal Rules Legislation last year, the budget now has to be passed before the end of the current fiscal year, on March 31.
