Religious group takes issue with ECJ’s petition signing exercise day

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) is today expected to have a petition signing exercise to regularise the boundaries of the Portmore Municipality.

The exercise has become necessary following boundary reassignments which left representatives for two divisions unable to sit on the council.

However, the National Religious Liberty Association says it is concerned a worship day was chosen to carry out such an important exercise.

The association says having the petition signing on any known day of worship is a breach of the constitutional rights of worshippers to their day of worship.

It says by selecting the Saturday, the ECJ is excluding Sabbath keepers from this significant period in the life of the Municipality.

In a letter to director of elections Orrett Fisher, the association suggested that the ECJ make suitable arrangements for the participation of Sabbath keepers on other days of the week and via the Internet.
