The Police High Command says come March 2, the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division will be renamed the Narcotics Division.

The command says the name change follows the creation of the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch which is now the main agency for transnational criminal matters.

According to the High Command, the Narcotics Division will form part of the Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB), with direct reporting responsibility to the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge CIB.

The Narcotics Division, will among other things, be the lead investigative arm for the Jamaica Constabulary Force on matter relating to narcotics trafficking.

The division will also be the JCF’s lead investigative arm on criminal investigations into specific areas of criminal activity within Jamaica, targeting the top tier drug syndicates and their networks, together with local and international partners.

The High Command says the new Narcotics Division will also provide oversight and manage the secure disposal of all narcotic seizures island-wide.
