Accused persons who wish to benefit from a discount on their sentence by pleading guilty next week have until the end of today to indicate their intention to do so.

May 22 will be the first Sentence Reduction Day introduced by the Supreme Court as part of its Criminal Case Management programme.

The initiative is aimed at providing opportunities for accused persons who are guilty to plead guilty on specific days on which significantly reduced sentences would be granted.

It applies to persons with cases before the Home Circuit Courts and Corporate Area Gun Courts.

Accused persons who wish to benefit from the initiative must notify the Home Circuit Criminal Registry or the Gun Court Registry in writing by the end of today.

The Jamaican Bar Association has welcomed the initiative.

The Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has also given his endorsement.

Chuck says he will be seeking to replicate the initiative in other courts.
