St James

Veronica Craig

A cheerful educator

Veronica Craig sees teaching as a way to give back to her country and has been doing so for the last 33 years. Craig, who has been teaching at Cornwall College since 1991, noted that one of her primary-school teachers influenced her to enter the profession.

"From a very young age, I wanted to teach and was influenced by my primary-school teacher, Ms Johnson," she said. "I want to help to empower students and ensure that they become good citizens of society."

Craig is committed to ensuring that her students have all the resources possible to excel. She also offers counselling services to her students when needed.

"On numerous occasions, I finance students with lunches, textbooks, and examination fees."

Her leadership of the Junior Achievement Company of Entrepreneurs (JACE) Programme at Cornwall College comes as no surprise as she did an excellent job as their head of business. Craig highlighted that she particularly likes the hands-on experience of the programme that help students better understand the country's economy.

"It empowers students by making them more responsible in assessing their personal skills, interests, and values, exploring career options and helping them to manage their finances."

Craig believes in the power of entrepreneurship and would like to see more of her students starting businesses.

"I would like to more of my students working together to become well-established businessmen and women, empowering others, and developing good values and standards, so that Jamaica may be a better place in the years to come."
