Mandeville father wins $500,000 tertiary grant
Twenty-four-year-old Romario Roach is the winner of one of two prizes of J$500,000 courtesy of NCB Insurance Omni Educators in Malta’s back-to-School promotion.
“They told me that I had won a laptop,” said Roach, who got way more than he bargained for at the handover ceremony on Friday, September 20.
The Mandeville resident is a self-taught barber who occasionally works as a mason to earn additional income. With an eight-month-old son, a wife, and bills, including his booth rental in the barbershop, expenses sometimes become overwhelming. Faced with what he describes as “hand-to-mouth living”, the young man’s dream is to give his son the best life possible.
“This is still such a surprise to me. I feel good knowing that this will one day be able to finance his education. He can know that he doesn’t have to worry about that because it’s already covered. Even now, I’m thinking that my wife, Sherece, could benefit from a portion of it as she really wants to go to HEART to get training in food and beverage,” said Roach.
With over 2,000 entries in the Malta Back to School Promotion this year, 106 persons benefited from cash, book vouchers, tertiary grants, laptops, tablets, and other prizes courtesy of sponsors Quaker Oats, Sangster’s Book Store and NCB Insurance Omni Educators.
