‘Autumn Scenery’ by Zou Yigui.

Into the mountains zigzags a stony path.

Houses are seen afar amid white clouds;

Stopping my cart, late maples I’ll admire,

Frosty leaves redder than spring flowers.

Du Mu (803-852) was an outstanding poet and essayist in the Tang Dynasty of China. The poem expresses the harmony between ancient Chinese people and nature.

Translated by Wang Chengjie, who is an art lover and teacher from Dalian Jiaotong University, China. He teaches Mandarin at Montego Bay Community College.

The painting by Zou Yigui is based on the autumn scenery, which has been described in the poem Du Mu. Zou Yigui (1686-1772) was an artist during the Qing Dynasty of China.
