Grace, space and pace – The Jaguar F-Pace:
The Jaguar F-Pace was formally announced at the 2015 North American International Auto Show and became locally available in June of this year. The F-Pace is Jaguar's first entry into the congested SUV segment. In order for this model to stand out, the design team at Jaguar turned to the company's spirited heritage.
Jaguar's founder, Sir William Lyons believed that each car designed and built by Jaguar should incorporate the attributes of grace, space and pace in each model it produced to set it apart from the competition. In executing the F-Pace, Ian Callum – Jaguar's lead designer used strong lines, aggressive styling with an athletic stance to create the F-Pace. Sitting on 20-inch wheels with large wheel wells, this SUV has a striking presence.The F-Pace is also lighter than most of its competitors thanks to an all-aluminum body structure.
A lot of past and present Jaguar design language is used on both the interior and exterior of the F-Pace. The oval shaped grille, the 'J' blade daytime running lights, the pulsing engine start/stop button and the rising rotary gear selector. The interior is well designed and premium materials are visible throughout the cabin. Interior mood lighting highlights the finest design details in the F-Pace with soft pools of light in a choice of 10 colours.
Our R-Sport model came with figure-hugging sports seats as a standard option.The cabin provides a car-like feel, as the seating position is lowered and the centre console is placed higher. This does not compromise the views out of the cabin.
In keeping with its athletic appearance, driving the F-Pace does not disappoint. The 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, providing seamless gear changes. The engine is a little noisier than we would have liked, but this does not compromise performance. Acceleration is swift with minimal turbo lag. The firm suspension and sporty handling of the F-Pace gives the feeling of it being a sports-sedan instead of an SUV, ready for a day at the track.
Our Italian racing red tester came equipped with park assist, for those of us who aren't versed at parallel parking. Sensors measure the identified parking space, and if suitable allow the F-Pace to accurately steer itself during both parallel and perpendicular parking. The driver remains in control of the brakes and accelerator.
The F-Pace is well equipped with modern luxury features – but two that stand out are the Jaguar Activity Key and the HUD.
The Jaguar Activity Key is a wearable, waterproof wristband that functions as the vehicles secondary key fob. To prevent water or extreme activity from damaging the main key fob – it can be left in the vehicle. The activity key secures the vehicle by 'tapping' on the 'J'(Jaguar name plate) on the tailgate which also deactivates the main key fob and locks the car after ten seconds. To regain access to the F-Pace, tap the wrist band on the 'J' and the car unlocks.
The head-up display uses four lasers to project information onto the windshield to provide crisper details, while most competitors use a LCD projection.
An all-wheel drive system is also present on the F-Pace with pre-set off-road settings. When the vehicle notes wheel slippage, Jaguar's adaptive surface control automatically selects the best mode to correct this issue.
The Jaguar F-Pace provides a unique car-like ride and a sport handling experience for drivers. Given its aggressive design and large wheels it is sure to turn heads on the streets of Jamaica.
