Mercedes-Benz GLE450: Lap of luxury
Luxury is a very hard thing to define. It varies from person to person but yet has a clearly defined edge in certain circumstances. In this case, the Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Line is a pure luxury sport utility vehicle, by covering all the major elements one would think of when the term luxury is applied.
The GLE450 is a full-size SUV, available in five- or seven- seat form. It is able to carry all passengers in serious comfort. Front-row occupants will revel in the spaciousness. This extends to the second row, where there’s plenty of head, leg, and elbow room for all but the largest human beings.
For cargo, electronically drop the second row to expand the cavernous interior for large items. The third row can handle two adults for short journeys or three kids for longer treks. They won’t be missing out on much with their own cupholders, USB ports and sense of space enhanced by the massive panoramic sunroof. Open it and the interior of the GLE450 gains the ambience of a living room.
Basking in the interior
A stately living room would be the best way to describe the quality of the GLE450’s interior. Once through the door, the cleanly designed cabin is swathed in the finest materials, especially in AMG trim, which adds Black Nappa Leather across major surfaces, backed by oak wood and aluminium trimmings throughout.
The dual 12.3-inch screens across the dashboard complete the living-room feel. From the driver’s seat, it’s like sitting on a comfortable couch looking at a large flat screen television. One screen provides instrumentation while the other is a touchscreen for the infotainment system. They are both bright and customisable to display whatever is desired. And it is literally whatever one desires.
Inside and out, the extras from AMG – Mercedes-Benz performance division, add further flair. Large brakes peek out from behind larger AMG wheels. The front and rear bumpers get a sporty apron and matching side skirts. Stepping across the illuminated running boards, drivers get to enjoy the AMG multifunction steering wheel.
Automated in many ways
The GLE450 moves the bar on convenience features. Everything that can possibly be automated is. The doors shut themselves with soft-close technology. The seats move to ease entry and return to one of the several pre-programmed driver settings. The rear hatch can be opened with a swipe of the foot. Even parking is a breeze, as the Mercedes can do so unassisted.
It can also play butler when called into action by the words, “Hey Mercedes”. This activates the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), a verbal interface that allows natural language control of various features. Want to open and close the panoramic sunroof shade? Just order the MBUX to do so. Need a seat massage or want to raise or lower the temperature, ask the MBUX. It even recognises which side of the vehicle the request is being made from, to avoid imparting the command on the other passenger.
The most important thing is that this doesn’t fall apart once the GLE450 is in motion. The suspension is tuned for maximum comfort even in the sportiest setting. The 3-litre six-cylinder turbocharged motor is as powerful as it is refined. There is never any indication that it is operating other than during forward motion or a heavy press of the accelerator, which results in a lovely burble from the rear as the nine-speed transmission shifts invisibly through the gears. Despite the size, driving dynamics are sound, courtesy of the all-wheel drive hiding the GLE’s weight, as it rolls quietly and smoothly over all surface types. This experience leaves occupants to enjoy the crystal-clear sounds from the impressive stereo system or any of the relaxing 64 colours of ambient lighting.
Therein lies the real luxury of the Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Line, the ability to do nothing and have everything. The core elements of luxury — space, comfort, quality, are at the top of the experience of the GLE450 and can be enjoyed without any further knowledge of the vehicle. Those with the curiosity can dig deeper into what the GLE can truly offer on the technology front, expanding their true appreciation for what this top-of-line sport utility vehicle can do in the name of luxury motoring.
