Digicel Group on Friday announced the closing of its acquisition of a regional submarine fibre network from Guadeloupe-based Loret Group and Caribbean Fibre Holdings.

The deal was first reported in December 2013 but was pending regulatory approval, which Digicel said it has now received. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The telecoms company said in a press release that the acquisition, marks another major step in its "ongoing evolution from a pure mobile provider to a global complete communications provider".

The network comprises 15 submarine segments and has a reach of 3,100 kilometres across the Caribbean - linking Trinidad and connecting 12 countries to Puerto Rico "with onwards connectivity to the United States". Digicel also said it would have capacity for connection to Europe and Asia.
