Jan 27: JSE climbs to new high

The Jamaica Stock Exchange Combined Index climbed 2,544 points or 1.49 per cent to close at 173,056.95 points on Wednesday. It eclipses the previous record high set January 13.

Some 4.5 million units traded, valued at $80 million. Of the 42 stocks that traded, 21 gained in value, 14 declined and seven were unchanged. The most heavily traded stocks were Cable & Wireless 448,890 units, Ciboney Group 323,300, and Lasco Manufacturing 285,652.

The largest price gains were made by Scotia Group, Jamaica Broilers and Radio Jamaica. Lossmakers were led by Scotia Investments, Proven Investments, Caribbean Cream/Kremi.

The JSE Combined Index incorporates the main and junior markets. The JSE Index gained 2,558 points Wednesday or 1.6 per cent to close at 162,031.07 points; the Junior Market Index rose 14.58 points 0.65 per cent to close at 2,244.68 points; while the JSE USD Equities Index dipped 13.2 points or 8.44 per cent to close down at 143.29 points.

The combined index is up 14,788 points or 9.34 per cent year to date.  The index previously peaked at 172,940 points on January 13.
