Feb 5: JSE stocks pummeled, drops 3,100 points
Jamaican stocks were pummeled on Friday, shedding 3,107 points or 1.76 per cent. The market closed the week at 173,031.91 points, after three straight days of record gains for the Combined Index of the Jamaica Stock Exchange.
The index rose as high as 176,139 points during the week.
On Friday, some 7.1 million units traded valued at $85 million. Some 41 stocks stock traded, of which 23 gained in value, 13 declined and five were unchanged. The top market movers were Gleaner, which notched 15 cents to close up at $2.80; Pulse Investments, which gained six cents to close at $3.96; and Barita Investments, which lost 19 cents to close down at $4.40.
The JSE Combined Index incorporates the main and junior markets. The JSE Index declined by 3,188.40 points to close at 161,823.49 points on Friday, the Junior Market Index declined by 11.14 points, while JSE USD Equities Index bucked the trend to head north with a gain of 1.19 points to close at 158.50 points.
