Feb 16: Jamaican stocks shed 3,413 points
Jamaican stocks got clobbered on Tuesday, erasing all of the previous day’s market gains. The Jamaica Stock Exchange Combined Index closed 3,413 points or 1.96 per cent lower at 170,670.43 points.
At the close of trading in 43 stocks, 23 of them declined in value, 10 appreciated and another 10 were unchanged. Overall market volume amounted to 4.5 million units valued at about $139 million.
The top three market movers, which together accounted for around 35 per cent of volume trades, were: Carreras, which climbed by $1.16 to close at $65; GraceKennedy, down a dollar at $83; and National Commercial Bank, which declined by $1.57 to end the day at $40.29.
The combined index includes the main, junior and US dollar equities markets. The JSE Index declined by 3,286.73 points to close at 159,171.06 points; the Junior Market Index declined by 34.76 points to close at 2,279.02 points, while the JSE USD Equities Index lost 3.95 points to close at 155.72 points.
