Derrimon to grow online shopping in line with global average

Starting next year, grocery chain Sampars plans to reach more customers in foreign markets via its e-commerce platform by developing new partnerships overseas.

The grocery business aims to grow online sales from two per cent to five per cent, which CEO of Derrimon Trading Limited Derrick Cotterell says is the international average for online sales. Derrimon is the operating company for Sampars.

Cotterell said that internationally, online grocery shopping flourishes in communities where it is easier to have goods delivered than to brave transport challenges.

The website,, which was launched about five years ago, mostly caters to Jamaicans living abroad who want to shop for connected parties who reside on the island, but Sampars also sends packages to Jamaicans living abroad.

"We have sent to some exotic places, including Dubai," Cotterell said.

Now, Derrimon wants to deepen its online market presence and is in talks with new partners who, via marketing, will be tasked to increase the reach of the online store.

"We are targeting mostly North America," said the Derrimon CEO. "The new arrangements should be consummated by the second quarter of 2018. They will give us a presence in the US primarily."
