Teacher, six students killed as vehicle plunges into canal in Guyana
The Caribbean country of Guyana is in mourning following the weekend tragedy in which a teacher and six students were killed when the car in which they were travelling plunged into a canal along East Coast Demerara.
According to the police, the vehicle went into the canal after the driver lost control of it.
The Demerarawaves newspaper has reports that the children were between the ages of five and 11.
The police have been quoted as saying that residents of the rice-growing community tried desperately to rescue the occupants who were taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
