Former Trinidadian Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has held on to the reigns of leadership of the United National Congress, following internal party elections on the weekend.

According to preliminary results, Persad-Bissessar triumphed over her rivals Dr Roodal Moonilal and Vasant Bharath.

Counts from 13 constituencies showed Persad-Bissessar had garnered 1,250 votes, Moonilal 160 and Bharath 84.

However, her opponents have called for fresh elections based on what they say are complaints and irregularities surrounding the voting.

Moonilal has challenged the fairness of internal election saying it was riddled with fraud and irregularities.

His claim came after over a dozen blank ballot papers were found on the bank of the Katwaroo Dam in Penal yesterday.

According to Moonilal, there were also reports of people seen with ballot papers outside polling stations in Central Trinidad, poor quality ink which could be wiped off, members’ names appearing several times on one list and in some cases the same names appearing in several constituencies.
