Steel company lays off nearly 500 workers in Trinidad and Tobago
Arcelor Mittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company yesterday announced it was laying off nearly 500 of its employees in Trinidad and Tobago.
It says the move is due to the continuing poor international market conditions in the steel industry.
The company says the workers will be laid off without pay until March 13, 2016.
But the Steel Workers’ Union of Trinidad and Tobago is accusing the company of failing to meet with it to discuss the matter.
The union is calling for the intervention of Trinidad's Labour Minister.
