At least 7,000 police, soldiers and prison service officers were eligible to cast ballots as voting in the Local Government Elections in Guyana began this morning.

This is the first local government poll since 1994.

The rest of the population is due to vote on March 18.

The now opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic won the last local government election and is urging supporters to ensure it is victorious this time around to keep the new coalition A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance for Change government in check.
