Tropical Storm Gonzalo weakens as it approaches southern Windward Islands
MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Gonzalo is now moving at 18 miles per hour while its maximum sustained winds weakened to 45 miles per hour, according to the United States-based National Hurricane Center’s Friday afternoon update.
Gonzalo is centred about 445 miles east of the southern Windward Islands.
The hurricane centre said that those in the Windward Islands should monitor the storm as it is expected to approach the islands late Friday and Saturday.
Some strengthening was possible but the storm is expected to weaken as it moves into the Caribbean Sea.
A hurricane watch has been issued for Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for several places, including St Lucia, Tobago and Grenada.
Forecasters said Gonzalo could bring two to five inches of rain.
