Voicemail promises energetic performance at Race for Hope

Dancehall group Voicemail says fans can expect an energetic performance at this weekend's seventh staging of Race for Hope 5K Run and Walk. The event is slated to take place this Sunday, September 28 at Hope Gardens, and is geared towards aiding in the refurbishing and maintenance of the Hope Gardens and Zoo.

"We are definitely going to give a mad, energetic performance to put an extra boost into runners after that powerful run. It's for a worthy cause so we will be going all out. Last year, we arrived late because of another engagement, but this time we will definitely be there on time; you might even see me running in the pack, you can never tell," Kevin of the group said.

The 5K race is open to runners and walkers of all fitness and experience levels, and is an initiative of the Jamaica Institution of Engineers and the Nature Preservation Foundation. All funds raised are used to support the needs of Jamaica's historic icon for open green spaces, fauna, flora and wildlife.

A member of the event's organising team, Hugh Gordon, spoke with The Gleaner about this year's staging, and he says the run has gained competition from other similar events; however, the Race for Hope remains unique.

"This is the only race in this region which sees runners running through a zoo, we are doing well on social media, right now our Facebook likes have grown, and we have been receiving attention on Twitter. Registration is still taking place and only costs $1,000," he said.

Gordon also pointed out, "The run is for Hope Zoo and the garden, we always speak about renovation. But that renovation has to be maintained. One lion takes a significant amount of money to feed. We have already contributed a significant amount of money and we want to continue to do more," he said.

Persons interested in sharing in the health-benefiting 5K run can sign up online via The race will start at 7 a.m., at Hope Gardens' Palm Drive. Hydration, yoga classes and other interesting happenings will also take place.

The Race for Hope Run and Walk is endorsed by Jamaica Producers, Carib Cement, China Harbour, JN, Digicel,, Power 106, among others.
