RDX takes on new territories
Dancehall duo RDX has certainly been taking on uncharted territories with recent shows in Réunion Island and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.
It would come as quite the surprise for some to hear of RDX performing in these places, where reggae and dancehall are not expected to be very popular.
Having left Jamaica at the end of October, RDX's Renigade, said they had two shows in Reunion Island and one in Mauritius, both of which the group thoroughly enjoyed.
"The performances were great. These people mainly speak French, so to see them singing word for word, is always a good thing. We really give thanks for the reception that we have been getting," Renigade said of the performances in the islands located close to Madagascar, off the coast of southeast Africa.
Following those shows, Renigade said they did a show in the Czech Republic, where they shared the stage with Anthony B, an experience which he said was also great. In addition to this, Renigade said they did another show in Lille, France.
POPULAR DESPITE DISTANCE
Despite these distances, Renigade said reggae and dancehall are very popular in these countries.
"In these countries, dancehall is pretty popular, but it is not the dancehall that is heard in Jamaica. It is the dancehall that has a certain flavour, that reaches these islands ... people can hear what you are saying, whether on the verse or on the chorus, and it is mainly dance or girl-related dancehall (songs) that get out here. The hard-core dancehall doesn't make it in these places, because they don't care about the controversies that are happening," Renigade told The Gleaner.
"These islands are like 14 hours from Paris, pass Africa and go down, so to see that dancehall and RDX is really going these places, is a lesson for all of us to learn. It was a great experience to know that we have graced these shores. We are out here making the mark and representing dancehall in a positive way."
RDX will be returning to Jamaica next month, and is expected to perform on GT Taylor's Christmas Extravaganza, as well as the Boom Energy Drink Tour. Also on their line-up is Island Mix in Tobago. In between touring, RDX will also be working on two albums.
