The Met Opera Encore in HD: Die Meistersinger Von Nirnberg is at the Palace Cineplex and Palace Multiplex at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

James Levine returns to one of his signature Wagner works, conducting this epic comedy - back at the Met for the first time in eight years - about a group of Renaissance master singers whose song contest unites a city. Johan Reuter, Johan Botha and Annette Dasch lead the superb international cast in this charming and magisterial celebration of the power of music and art.

Hailed as America's greatest conductor, Levine, 71 years old, has been with the Met since 1971 and assumed the post of music director in 1976. He also held leadership positions with the Ravinia Festival, the Munich Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

During Levine's tenure, the Metropolitan Opera orchestra expanded into the realms of recording and separate concert series for the orchestra and chamber ensembles from The Met Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Levine has also led the Metropolitan Opera on many domestic and international tours.

Health problems

Following a series of injuries that began with a fall in Boston, subsequent health problems led to his withdrawal from many performances and, in 2011, he formally withdrew from all conducting at the Met. After two years of physical therapy, Levine returned to conducting in a May 2013 concert with the Met Opera Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. In 2013, he made his big comeback at the Met in a revival production of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte.

James Levine led his 2,500th performance at the Metropolitan Opera in October.
