Shaggy confirmed for Moon Palace opening March 7
Reggae superstar Shaggy has been confirmed to perform at the grand opening of the five-star, all-inclusive Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Resort in Ocho Rios on Saturday, March 7.
Moon Palace Jamaica Grande opens after extensive refurbishing to upgrade it to five-star
status, after Palace Resorts
purchased the property from Sunset Resorts last year.
New York-based Destine Media is reporting that Shaggy will headline the concert at the hotel, which is Palace Resorts' first property to be opened outside of the company's home base in Mexico.
The deal puts Shaggy (real name Orville Burrell) in a category that includes internationally renowned artistes like Usher, Shakira, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias, who have performed at Palace Resorts' properties.
"Moon Palace Jamaica Grande marks the next chapter in the brand's 30-year history," Destine Media has quoted Gibran Chapur, executive
vice-president of Palace Resorts, as saying.
"It is our hope that our first property outside of Mexico will capture the attention of new and past guests alike, by coupling the appeal of Moon Palace's stellar entertainment offerings with Jamaica's vibrant allure, to create an unrivalled destination resort.
"We can't think of a better way to celebrate the newest property in Palace Resorts' growing portfolio than with an electrifying performance from Shaggy."
Palace Resorts have eight properties in Mexico and have become synonymous with world-class entertainment.
"With now eight diverse award-winning properties located throughout Mexico and now Jamaica, the Palace Resorts team has always taken great pride in continually redefining what an all-inclusive resort can and should offer valued guests via unmatched amenities, the highest standards in service and the
distinct ability to provide the backdrop for unforgettable
"It is our goal to bring that same world-class entertainment to Jamaica," Chapur said.
Shaggy won a Grammy for his 1996 album Boombastic, and has been nominated on four other occasions. He has also earned several Billboard awards.
This year, he is included in the reggae category along with multiple-winner Ziggy Marley, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Sean Paul, SOJA, and Sly and Robbie who, incidentally, are the producers of Shaggy's album.
Shaggy's Out Of Many One Music project includes a long list of Jamaican and international artistes, including Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley, Super Cat, Chronixx, Konshens, Beres Hammond, Maxi Priest, the late Dennis Brown, Cocoa Tea, Tarrus Riley, and The Voice winner, Tessanne Chin. Jimmy Cozier, Peetah Morgan, Joe, Ne-Yo, Melissa Musique and Samira are also featured on the album.
Destine Media is also reporting that Shaggy has inked a new deal with Sony that also includes Brooklyn Knights and his own Ranch Entertainment. The deal allows Shaggy to have creative say in the production of his music while having the support of a giant music brand.
