Based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's story, The Nutcracker is one of the great classics.With iconic music by celebrated Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and entrancing sets and costumes, this wonderful tale explores the universal themes of love, power and evil.
This great classic will be showcased at Palace Cineplex and Palace Multiplex on Sunday, February 15, at 11:30 a.m., in a grand encore performance by the renowned Bolshoi Ballet Company direct from the Moscow stage.
Chief among the groups already committed to attend is staff from the Russian Embassy in Jamaica, headed by Ambassador, His Excellency, Vladimir Polenov, who will give a special address before the showing at Palace Cineplex.
One of the oldest and most prestigious companies in the world, The Bolshoi Ballet has lineage dating back to 1776. Much has been said about restoration of the theatre in Moscow. According to official data, the theatre building is one of Russia's symbols - an emblem of Russian pride and honour, it represents the people and their heritage.
Designed by Joseph Bove, it was originally founded by Moscow Prosecutor Prince Pyotr Vasilyevich Urusov and Michael Maddox, an English entrepreneur and theatre manager.
Commenting on the great interest shown by Jamaican audiences in the Bolshoi Ballet season and enthusiasm for The Nutcracker Melanie Graham, marketing manager, Palace Amusement, said the company is heartened and encouraged by the response.
"We took a bold step with the introduction of alternative content on our screens and we have been able to bring amazing global performances to local audiences like never before. Now, for many Jamaicans seeing a Bolshoi Ballet, a Met Opera, or a West End play is no longer a dream; it is now happening. It is larger than life, riveting and often in real time," Graham said.
