Rock the Mic exposing talents in Ocho Rios
A new avenue has opened for persons with talent who are seeking exposure. Rock the Mic, a talent series with a new twist, was launched January 28 at AquaVue Cuisine at Mystic Ridge hotel in Ocho Rios.
Unlike other talent-seeking events, the final decision in choosing the top talents for the night rests in the hands of patrons. To get a performer to return for a second performance, patrons must use their AquaVue receipts to bid on that performer.
Performers will also get overseas exposure as AquaVue Cuisine has landed a deal to have the show aired on Wei-Vybz Radio 97.5 FM in Brooklyn, New York, and on NoyzRadio.com. The first event was recorded and later aired, but future shows will be aired live.
At the first show, competition was close and patrons had some amount of uncertainty as to who to bid on, but bid they did.
The event, which continued on February 13, will be held every other Friday after that, with a host of prizes to the eventual winner at the April 24 finals.
The winner will receive prizes including $50,000 cash, a five-hour session at a top recording studio, a two-night stay at Mystic Ridge, among other things, while winners from each Friday night leading up to the finals will receive either a three-course meal for two at AquaVue Cuisine or two passes to Mystic Mountain, or a two-night stay at Mystic Ridge.
Prizes for bidders
Another difference with this talent series is that bidding patrons also stand a chance to win prizes. The highest bidder each week will win either a three-course meal for two at AquaVue Cuisine or two passes to Mystic Mountain.
After the first round, three performers emerged who will proceed to the next round. They are Jimbolee, who came out on top, followed by a poet known as Skriptcha, and then Funksion in third position.
Good performances also came from Zedek, Synikal, Elegant, Nickapella and Chocolate Girl.
The competition is open to all performers such as singers, DJs, poets and instrumentalists.
