Rapper, Empire actor Yazz for Sumfest
Yazz has been confirmed to appear at this year's staging of Reggae Sumfest at Catherine Hall, Montego Bay. The 21-year-old rapper/actor is scheduled to
perform on International Night, Friday, July 17.
Johnny Gourzong, executive director, Summerfest Productions, producer of the event, is ecstatic at the young act's inclusion.
"Summerfest is committed to the development of music in this hemisphere and believes that young artistes must have a platform to showcase their talents. The Sumfest stage has been the platform for many young acts, and we are happy to confirm that Yazz will be one of those at the 2015 staging," Gourzong said.
Yazz is popularly known for his role in the television series Empire as Hakeem Lyon, an aspiring rapper and son of
platinum rapper and producer, Lucious Lyons.
Born Bryshere Gray, Yazz the Greatest (as he is known on stage) is already a skilled hip-hop artiste in his own right. He started
rapping at 16, after being injured playing football for Overbrook High School.
While recuperate, the Philadelphia rapper spent months studying music and, in 2011 released his first music video, for the single Ransom, which earned him a place as one of the city's top young artistes.
Although he is yet to release his debut album, Yazz has been making an impact since 2013 with tours and appearances at music festivals, including Jay Z's Made in America Festival. He also made appearances at the Roots' Picnic Festival and Power 99FM's Powerhouse concert.
