Traffic changes for Carnival
The police are advising members of the public that there will be several road closures across the Corporate Area to facilitate the annual Bacchanal Jamaica Carnival Road March, as well as the Jamaica Carnival Road March, today.
Several major thoroughfares will be closed temporarily at various times during the day, starting at 8 a.m. The main corridors to be affected are Arthur Wint Drive, Mountain View Avenue (from the top of Arthur Wint Drive, heading north), Old Hope Road, Hope Road (from Matilda's Corner, heading south), West Kings House Road, East Kings House Road, Waterloo Road and Constant Spring Road (from the intersection of East Kings House Road to Half-Way Tree Square).
The public is being advised that the roads intersecting with these areas will experience some traffic diversions throughout the day. Personnel will be deployed at various points along the route to guide motorists. The police have also asked that if members of the public can steer clear of using these roads altogether during the Carnival activities on Sunday they should do so to avoid being inconvenienced.
It is expected that traffic will return to normal along all roadways by about 9 p.m., as Bacchanal Jamaica activities are expected to end at 8 p.m. at Mas Camp, while Jamaica Carnival is expected to culminate in Half Way Tree Square at 7 p.m.
Event organisers for both events have sought to assure the public that the necessary security measures have been put in place to ensure their safety on the road on Sunday. They are, however, asking revellers to be cautious on the roads and travel in groups to maximise their own safety.
