On Sunday, May 8, the To Mom With Love concert will celebrate the special bond between mothers and their children in Jamaica. It will be the 14th staging of what the event's organiser, Horseman, started as a one-off concert.

It does not hurt that it is timed to coincide with the second Sunday of May, which is celebrated Mother's Day.

"We had Stars R Us (a vintage Jamaican popular music series) and so we wanted a show for mothers," Horseman said. The overseas acts were a part of To Mom With Love from the outset, when The Manhattans were the guests. "It worked, so we continued," Horseman said. The format was maintained and some of the overseas performers have been Millie Jackson, Rose Royce and Air Supply (at points, part of a larger vocal unit coming in).

The 2016 staging at the Constant Spring Golf Club, St Andrew, maintains the mix of overseas and Jamaican performers. The line-up is The Main Ingredient, The three Degrees, Leroy Sibbles, Gem Myers, George Nooks, Patrick Baddo, and the Fab 5 Band. Mutabaruka will provide recorded music and Ron Muschette is slated to perform hosting duties.

Chorale effect

In selecting the non-Jamaican performers for each To Mom With Love, Horseman said, "We look for artistes that hit in the '70s and '80s, who were popular in Jamaica, that the Moms will enjoy with singalong songs." For that chorale effect, The Main Ingredient have Everybody Plays the Fool and Just Don't Wanna Be Lonely, among other hits, while The 3 Degrees have When Will I See You Again in their arsenal. The concert organiser said The Main Ingredient will be coming with a 10-piece band.

Still, Horseman points out that, "We have the younger Moms too. Most of these songs are played in the club and like when you go to Yesterday and Mello Vibes. So To Mom With Love has a large amount of young audience".

He said that accessing overseas acts is "not difficult. Once I was introduced to Dionne Wrawick she helped me along the way". Among the Jamaican performers at previous stagings have been John Holt, Pat Kelly, Errol Dunkley and Sibbles.

Slated charities are the Victoria Jubilee Hospital and Jamaica Christian Boys Home, with Mayor of Kingston Angela Brown-Burke, as patron of the the event.

Horseman said To Mom With Love is known for starting on time, so showtime is 7 p.m. after gates open at 6 p.m. "We should be out of there by 11 p.m.," he said.
