"Artistes like Tifa, Bounty Killer, and Spice have also performed in the past at Downtown Carnival, and regardless of the widely accepted idea that carnival is on soca, it is focused on local culture because the participants understand that every country that has a culture of music, will have a carnival surrounding it," Downtown Carnival promoter, O'Neil Smith explained.

Over the years, the costumes appear mostly dancehall-inspired, with fishnet stockings paired with metallic booty shorts and belly-skin cropped tops, but Smith wants to do more with this year's theme - The Lost City of Z. The concept is taken from a book published in 2009 (movie released in 2016) based on the story of a British explorer to find the lost city in the Amazon. Previous Downtown carnival themes included, Pirate's Revenge and Law and Order in the City.

Smith wanted to do costumes that depicted Indians and various tribes, but has decided to do printed T-shirts as a last resort, to cut down on expenses.

Smith says, "The highlight of the parade is that it has been incident free, with strong support provided by law enforcement, but there is unity among persons from areas considered volatile," when they come together for Downtown carnival.
