It is1979 and young Donna embarks on a series of adventures throughout Europe after graduating from Oxford University. On her journeys, she makes the acquaintances of Harry, Bill and Sam - the latter with whom she falls in love - but he's also the man who breaks her heart. In the present day, Donna's pregnant daughter, Sophie, dreams of renovating a taverna while reuniting with her mother's old friends and boyfriends on the Greek island of Kalokairi.

Reprising their roles from Mamma Mia! are the film's original stars Academy Award winner Meryl Streep as Donna; Julie Walters as Rosie and Christine Baranski as Tanya. Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper reunite as Sophie and Sky, while Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, and Academy Award winner Colin Firth return to play Sophie's three possible dads: Sam, Bill and Harry.

As the film goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present, Lily James (Cinderella/Downton Abbey) plays the role of Young Donna. Filling the roles of Young Rosie and Young Tanya are Alexa Davies and Jessica Keenan Wynn. Young Sam is played by Jeremy Irvine, Young Bill is Josh Dylan and Young Harry is Hugh Skinner. Also featured are Oscar and Grammy Award winner Cher and Grammy Award winner Andy Garcia. Ol Parker is the writer/director.
