Seasoned Love: The Gayles’ Story

Published:Monday | December 22, 2014 | 12:00 AM

'Tis the season to be jolly, so let's kick off the Christmas season with a festive love story. Jolyn Bryan and Omar Gayle, met in 2009, at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, through a mutual friend. However, it wasn't until Christmas of 2010 that they became good friends.

"We spent a lot of time getting to know each other. We went to parties, took social rendezvous to the mountains and beach. We also had study sessions together, and he helped me out with a lot of difficult essays, motivating me to do my best and be a better person." Bryan recounted.

Gayle noted that over that fateful Christmas season was when he realised that she was the one, but it wasn't until March of the following year that they became intimate and pretty soon, their friendship bloomed into a sizzling three-year romance.

The Proposal

The proposal actually happened last year at their official housewarming party in Old Harbour among friends. A round of a drinking game turned into clues for a secret proposal. With their friends saying only one word, the clue read, "Jolyn... go... into... the... kitchen... for... a... surprise." There she discovered a glowing diamond ring on the table, and it was there that Gayle took up the ring, got down on one knee, and asked his girlfriend, "Will you marry me?" Her screams signalled a resounding yes, and the once college buddies embarked on new journey as soon to be husband and wife.

Wedding Planning

Due to unfortunate circumstances, their wedding day was moved from March to May before finally settling in October, just days after Bryan's birthday. "Our families and friends both locally and abroad, really came together for us and I just want to thank them for their support and assistance in the planning and executing of the beautiful wedding we had. The wonderful evening was made possible through their sweat, hard work, and generosity, we just could not have done it without them," beams Gayle.

The Wedding Day

On Saturday, October 11, 2014, family members and friends gathered at the Mona Baptist Church to witness the union. In a sea of rich burgundy and gold, the couple solemnised their vows officiated by Reverend Dr Stephen Jennings. Their reception followed at their reception at Gordon's Place on Tucker Avenue.

"Making Jolyn my wife is by far the easiest decision I have made in my life! Apart from her obvious beauty, she portrayed all the characteristics of a fantastic partner and potential mother to our future children - strength, confidence, integrity, and, most of all, humility. We could be ourselves around each other and we kept each other strong through various times of trouble. I don't think I could have been happier with anyone else," the groom said of his new bride.

His bride shared similar sentiments, affirming, "I couldn't ask for a more perfect life partner."
