'Fêting' with Flair: Choosing a costume
The highly anticipated carnival season is finally here! And, already, people have been 'wukin up' 'like ah boss'.
Now, in honouring the full swinging of wired waistlines, Flair has set sail in tapping into and unleashing the true socaphile within you.
Welcome to Fêting' with Flair, a guideline on how to celebrate the real spirit of soca. Here, we will provide useful tips on how to prep for the season, from fitness to places to party, even where to find necessary accessories in accentuating your look for the road march in April.
You ready? Let's do this!
This week, we are starting from the very beginning. If you haven't already chosen your costume for Bacchanal, we suggest you do so very soon because costumes are going fast.
How do you go about choosing a costume to go chipping down the road with 15 choices?
Some may go for their favourite colour while others may opt for fashion, choosing based on style. A few may go for the actual fit of the costume, and there are those whose loyalties lie with their place of employment or they will go wherever their friends are going.
We asked a few soca revellers which costume they have chosen this year and why. This is what they had to say:
Q) I'm jumping with Digicel this year, because their costume design is different. I like the colours; it looks like a Rio Parrot.
- H.E., female, seven years jumping
Q) I'm jumping with Unleashed because I love the colour scheme and the vybe the band is giving. They're full of energy and I am full of energy. Also because I like the cut of the bottom, love the daring skimpiness for carnival.
- A.S., female, first year jumping
Q) Jumping with Thire also known as Peenie wallie this year. I like their costume because it's unique, standing out from the typical two-piece. It's made for big girls like myself.
- K.E., female, jumping for four years.
Q) I chose Lehwegosleek costume because it is the biggest and definitely the sexiest. The colours are beautiful and when it comes to carnival I say the bigger the better, so I just had to have this one.
- B.S., female, five year jumping
Q) I am jumping with Lehwegosleek. I loved the design of their costume and the exclusivity of their frontline section. I've been jumping for years with Bacchanal Jamaica, but I really wanted to see the kind of service Lehwegosleek would provide.
- S.G., female
Well, there you have it. Be sure to check out all the costumes available and make the decision that is right for you, your style as well as your personality.
