Spring shades are not only in for fashion, but also for beauty. As you fill your wardrobe with fabulous spring colours, don't forget your face. From vivacious colours to a minimalist approach, even 'au natural', its all on trend for the spring/summer season. It's time to shine and show off our fiery reds and plums lips this season.

Women of colour have to be aware and not try to use all the trends at once. While we are trying to stay true to spring and embody the beautiful colour of nature, we do want it to complement our skin tones. Make-up artist Tonij Phillips gave Flair a few tips on what is in this season:

High Impact Lips

The lip colour of the season is bold and supersaturated. Stand out in any crowd or outfit with toned-down eyes. Remember strong lips and soft eyes or cat eyes.

Graphic Eyeliner

Whether it is a swoosh or slash, exaggerated cat eyes demand attention. Intense but not over the top, it can be done by the average woman. If you dare to be bold, try a spiky edge where your liner exits your eyelid.

Browns

A brown smokey eye that extends to the lower lash line with a hint of a rustic bronze colour is good for a night out on the town. You may add a touch of gold to the inner corner of your eye. Browns are flirty and fun without being over the top. This was displayed at this year's fashion week. The brown is a softer approach to the smoky and is easier to manoeuvre.

Effortless Glow

This trend seems almost too laid back - a beach bronze glow on the go. It is effortlessly edgy and natural with a touch of gold and bronze blend. For a dewy finish, feel free to add a little liquid bronzer to your foundation for a post-workout finish.

Colour liner

The season is all about touches of neon. Add a pop of orange, neon yellow, or even sky blue above your liner. Apply thinly or extended slightly from the inner corner of your eye (not full length of your lower lash line).

Haze of Purple

This is another take on the smokey eye but is suitable for daywear. This look takes less time. The purple is faded slightly above the eye crease and extends to the lash line. No eyeliner is used for this look. For a softer and more glamorous finish - a touch of copper or gold may be added to accentuate the inner crease and to give the look more life.
