Fashionable, safe workout outfits
Wearing the right outfit to the gym or your varying workout activities, will not only make you look and feel fabulous, but will also enhance your workout and results. There is such a thing as the 'wrong gear'. Flair Magazine got together with Western Sports and Velocity Wellness centre for fashion and safety tips on the appropriate workout wardrobe just for you.
Something as simple as wearing a proper sports bra can do wonders. According to Margaux Brown, Lifestyle Category manager of Western Sports, sport bras are best suited for strenuous physical activity, because they are tighter than a regular bra, and it holds the bust and muscles firmly in place. “This is to avoid discomfort or unwanted movements” Brown explained.
Light, medium and high support sports bras are the three main types of workout bras available. “The light support bra is usually for A-B cups, and are ideal for minimal exercise activity. The medium support bra is usually for A-C cups and a mid level range of cardio activities- like short distance running and treadmill exercises. The high support bra is ideal for all cup sizes and provides maximum support for high level cardio activity like aerobics, zumba and running,” Brown explained.
According to Brown, tights, workout underwear and brief lining in workout shorts are all are appropriate gears for workout. “Long or short tights reduce the risk of abrasion, absorbs moisture and prevents friction between the legs. It holds the genitals in place thus allowing free workout,” Brown explained.
Brown told Flair that the appropriate shorts must be made of a lightweight and breathable material, it must have moisture management technology, odour absorbing and compression technology to enhance the workout process and aid muscle formation.
Have you ever had to soak your feet for hours after a workout session? That maybe because you were not wearing the correct shoes? There is more to a workout shoe than you think.
Rupert Johnson, owner of Velocity Wellness Centre who is also a former Mr Jamaica bodybuilder (2001-2003 and 2011-2013), explained to Flair the importance of appropriate footwear for the gym.
“A gym shoes carries a gel that gives balance and support and helps to distribute the body weight evenly. It must also have instep support to prevent pains,” Johnson explained.
Johnson notes that the ankles should always be supported. The top of your sneakers should touch (at least) the balls of your ankle.
Depending on the type of workout or exercise you are doing, Brown highlights that different activities require different shoes, whether - running, cross-training or workout sneakers, all have special technological features that provides better support for the feet. “These shoes must have good cushioning in the heel and soul to support the different movements. They provide more stability, reducing the risk of injury or damage to ankles, back and knees,” Brown explained.
