The Jamaica Cancer Society which celebrates their 60th anniversary this year, launched Breast Cancer Awareness Month last Tuesday at their Lady Musgrave Road headquarters.

In her presentation, Executive Director Yulit Gordon expressed her appreciation for the generous donations from private and public sector organisations to purchase a new digital, state-of-the-art, mammography unit. With the acquisition of the unit, the society is able to provide breast-cancer screening for more Jamaican women.

Present at the launch was Kadia Wright brand manager of Yoplait, distributed by the Wisynco group. She pledged her company's support in the fight against this disease. For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they have launched their Yoplait "Friends in the Fight" campaign. This will see them donating $10 from the sale of every 5.4- and six-ounce tub of Yoplait to the Jamaica Cancer Society from October 1-November 15.

activities

Gordon noted that through the month of October there will be several initiatives and activities focused on promoting and increasing awareness about breast cancer.

Friday, October 16, will be recognised as World Mammography Day - and there will be a 10 per cent discount on mammograms for JCS members, and five per cent discount for non JCS member.

October 25 is the Breast Cancer Medical Conference which will take place at Knutsford Court Hotel. Presenters include Drs Guyan Arscott, Patrick Roberts, Bernadette Frankson, and Derria Cornwall.

To conclude the month's activities is their signature event, 'Keeping Abreast Luncheon' which celebrates cancer survivors. This will be held at on October 29 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel and this year's guest speaker will be actress, singer and activist, Sheryl Lee Ralph.
