We've all found ourselves down this road during this time of the year - we enjoy numerous scrumptious dishes and sweet treats, only to face the music 'fully loaded' for the New Year.

Detoxifying your life might just be what you need, and this week, Flair went to the source with natural 'juicologist', Cherie Dowdie, who explains the benefits of this method.
Overindulgence, Dowdie noted, often leads to feelings of sluggishness, bloating, weight gain, and a general sense of physical unease. Therefore a detox is needed to rid the body of these side effects. "Detoxing is twofold because first, during the detox period you're not consuming more of these foods and drinks and are, therefore, giving your body a chance to process and clear," she explained.
She continues, "A detox works by eliminating certain foods from your diet, and in some cases, focusing on consuming particular ones. There are many ways to detox, starting with eliminating a few items - for example meat and wheat products - to limiting your diet to fruits and veggies only. There is a juice detox, where only juices and smoothies are consumed, and this is favoured because not only do you receive the benefits of consuming whole, fresh foods in the form of fruits and veggies, it's easier on your digestive system as it's processing the simplest foods in the easiest form to digest," Dowdie explained.
She added that a detox could also be in the form of a water fast, where only water is consumed for a period.
Dowdie outlines some of the benefits of detox, which include some weight loss; increased energy; clearing of the bowels; improved hair, skin, and nails; improved mental clarity; improvement in chronic conditions such as inflammatory conditions, hypertension, and eczema.
Going into the New Year represents a period of change, and for Dowdie, a detox is often a catalyst for larger goals. "Seeing the real and measurable results that come from making changes in this one area is very empowering and often leads to more long-lasting dietary adjustments, as well as changes in other areas," she highlights.
