Home remedy for ZIKV
If chik-V wasn't scary enough, a new epidemic known as the Zika Virus is now on the horizon. Now, Zika Virus or ZikV is a whole new playing field, with symptoms not only plaguing you, but possibly reeking medical havoc on your bundle of joy in your tummy, if you are within your first trimester.
Well, the beautiful thing about it this time around is that you can be prepared. You can now make your very own mosquito repellent at home using essential oils as your main ingredients. Blogger and vlogger Chelan Smith explained that she came up with her mosquito repellent 'recipe' after seeing people on social platform saying that they didn't see any natural repellents for Chik-V and ZikV, since they suffered from allergies, asthma and other respiratory problems.
So, Mamachel, as she refers to herself on her blog, took on a new and exciting adventure and headed over to Google to do some research. "I looked up essentials oils that repel the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, and from there I just built it up," Smith explained to Flair.
She learned that lemongrass oil, citronella oil, and clove oil are specific repellents against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. She also discovered that lavender is a mosquito repellent which gives off a nice scent and that Jojoba oil is great for moisturizing, to "bring on the glow," she highlighted. Some distilled water here, some drops of Vodka there, she gathered her findings and the rest, as they would say it, was history: she had her very own mosquito repellent.
She originally lathered up with it for chik-V and realising that she hadn't contracted the virus, and that it had in fact worked, she decided to share her knowledge and spread the word via social media to fight against ZikV. And just to clear the air, she is not selling the repellent, she is merely a civilian joining the fight against ZikV and has decided to donate her innovative mosquito repellent to a worthy cause - the public.
She noted, significantly, that according to the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease 2013, the estimated repellent period when clove oil is mixed with coconut oil is 76-96 minutes, while with
citronella and lemongrass, it's
105-112 minutes. So, what are you waiting for? Ditch those toxic brands of bug spray and shake off those mosquitoes the natural way with your DIY mosquito repellent today.
