Old Hollywood Glam
Gianna Fakhourie and Jonathan Neil's first meeting was serendipitous. The two met at a party - Kampai - in 2011. It was held at Dunn's River Falls in Ochi Rios, St Ann, and Fakhourie had gone there with a date.
She told Flair: "I actually lost the guy in the crowd. As I was looking for him, I was intercepted by this guy who said to me, 'you look like you're looking for someone. I help people find people.' I thought it was so corny."
She was about to walk off when the sweet-talking stranger held her by the hand and asked her name. When she told him, he said that he had attended school in Canada with someone with the last name Fakhourie. It turned out that she knew the person he was talking about and the ice was officially
broken. Fakhourie started fiddling with her phone to try to locate her date, and the crafty Neil took the opportunity to ask for her BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) PIN. Just then, Fakhourie spotted her date in the distance, so she hurriedly gave Neil the info with all intentions of ignoring his BBM requests or deleting them in short order. The two then parted company and went back to their respective plans for the night.
Johnathan told Flair of that fateful night, "I approached her at the party because, honestly, I was just looking. I never knew what I would find. I found my wife."
The next day, Neil messaged Fakhourie to find out if she had got back into Kingston OK.
"I told him that I did, and he left it at that. He wasn't a nuisance, so I left him on my BBM. A few days later, he messaged me and we were talking, but he was taking very long to respond between messages, so I got annoyed and asked him for his number. I called him and we talked for a long time and he had me laughing. The next time he called, he asked if he could take me out. It was a Friday night, about 7 p.m. and I was in my bed, which I know is very pathetic. So, I told him the only place I was going was up my hill for a walk. He asked where I lived and we realised that he lived five minutes away. He said, 'See you in 10 minutes'."
She continued: "By the time I could put on my workout clothes, he was by my gate. So, we walked up the hill, then we came back down and he left. The next evening he asked me if I didn't want to exercise and I told him that my doctor said I couldn't go
up the hill. He said 'it's OK, I will keep you on the flat.' By now, I was seeing him every day. One day I said to him, I don't know why I'm entertaining you when I'm not interested in you. He said to me, 'That's what you say now'."
Fakhourie would soon confess to her suitor that she was on a special diet.
"He researched my diet and came over and made a meal that fit into my diet. And it was really strict. When he did that, I didn't know what to do. He was so thoughtful. I told my friends and they asked why I kept trying to get rid of him."
Neil invited Fakhourie to his birthday party. "But I didn't want to go. When we met, he told me he was dating a lot. I was worried that I would see other girls that he was dating. That's when I realised I actually liked him. But my friend dragged me and he spent the entire night taking care of me. It was his birthday, but he was catering to me. By the end of the night, everyone knew who I was. The Sunday after his birthday, he took me to meet his aunt, Joan. Then he asked me to be his girlfriend. No one had ever asked me before. So, I said yes."
"It was December 13. I remember it was raining cats and dogs and we were supposed to have lunch at Villa Ronai. When we arrived, there was no one in the entire restaurant. He was on his phone a lot, which he doesn't do. As we were waiting for the bill, the waitress was taking a very long time, which I found strange as we were the only ones there. Then, I saw her coming around the corner with a cake and I started bawling. The cake had a frog on it (I collect frogs) holding a rise with the ring. On the cake was written, 'Will you marry me?' There was this lady taking pictures of me and I probably looked like hell. So I started saying 'I hate you.' He got down on one knee and asked me, and I said, 'Yea, but I still hate you.'"
The bride-to-be decided on an 'old Hollywood' wedding theme. "I planned everything by myself," she said.
"I decided against flowers because I don't like to see anything die. Not one petal was in my entire wedding. I think it's a waste. Flowers are so beautiful in their element and no one can use it again. At least my feathers aren't dead."
Fakhourie reflected on what makes her husband so special. "He makes it fine for me to be me. I don't have to second-guess myself. I spent so long trying not to be with him. I never fixed up anything for him. I told him what was on my mind. When you have that, you want to keep that," she said.
According to Johnathan, "We wanted to take a trip to Blue Mountain, and Gianna knew that she couldn't manage it because she had been there before and climbed to the top. But she still decided to come on the adventure and make the trek because I had never been before. It showed me that she would put her difficulties aside and be up for a challenge because she cared enough to do something with me. She is not an outdoors person; she doesn't like those things, but she was willing to do it because of me. She is the real deal.
