Koereyelle DuBose knows all about living life on purpose. She was one of the speakers on the topic at Unapologetically Women Soulful Oasis retreat held in Negril recently, where she shared some thoughts on finding a passion for life.

DuBose's first point of advice to the group of women at the retreat was: "Choose yourself in every area of your life."

She shared her story of how she thought she had found the man of her dreams only to later realise that she was in an abusive relationship. She implored the participants to "choose yourself no matter what".

She noted that when she had to walk away in the middle of planning her wedding, it took a lot of courage, but she had to choose herself. She spoke of the embarrassment she faced in having to explain to people why she was not getting married. She even thought about moving to another state (she was living in the United States at the time) but realised, "you can't run away from your problems".

ON WALKING AWAY

Not only did she break free from a relationship that was not serving her, but she also walked away from a profession she went to college and spent years preparing for - teaching. By doing all of this, she was able to figure out her true purpose.

Today, she has authored two books - Werk 101 and Confessions of a WORKAHOLIC. She also runs a very successful website - ReadyToWERK.com - a branding boutique that offers classes in coaching and consulting for small business owners. The company also offers graphic design, web development and product creation services.

DuBose outlined what she calls her Dream Design Process.

1 Define your purpose. You have to figure it out by deciding:

(a) What are you passionate about?

(b) What makes your spirit smile? Are you a dog lover etc.? Whatever it is may be your passion.

(c) What are you naturally good at? She said you should never doubt the good that everyone else sees in you.

(d) What cause is close to your heart?

(e) Have you gone through a life- changing experience that taught you a lesson?

2 Strategise. She notes that you can wish, but you have to put action behind your wish. "Put a plan behind your purpose."

3 Collaborate. If your dream doesn't require support from anyone else, it's not big enough. You have to surround yourself with people who believe in you and will help you believe in yourself.

4 Focus. Never lose sight of what you are working towards.

5 Maintain. Put a system in place to help you maintain your success.

"There is something inside of every one of us dying to get out. We all have something to share. When you are getting paid for doing what you love, then you know you're living your purpose. Faith creates opportunities that fear will keep hitting. Fear always asks 'how?' Don't limit yourself by your day-to-day activities."

She noted that from her own experience, "Other people don't have to understand your purpose. Not everyone will be with you - you have to shed something to get where you want to go. Complacency will kill you."
