DIY Jo | Shea Moisture review
I have always been particular about what I use in my hair. So when I tell you to try a product, I mean it. And I'm telling you all my naturalistas, try Shea Moisture.
Gray Urban Trading is now distributing the Shea Moisture line. Because you have asked for recommendations, I wanted to put it to the test, and took up their offer to use the entire Coconut and Hibiscus Line with a few additives.
So I had already tried the shampoo and conditioner as well as the curling smoothie, but not all at the same time. So this time, I did it the right way. I used the co-wash in my hair first, just so that I could tell you how it felt. It was surprisingly cleansing, but it is exactly what it says it is - a co-wash. It is perfect for in-between washes, as it does not strip the hair, thus retaining the hair's natural moisture.
However, if your hair needs a wash, go straight for the shampoo. It gives you a great clean and does not make your hair trashy. I followed with the conditioner, which is one of my favourite things about this line.
The conditioner easily detangles your hair. I have said this before, but just in case you are a new reader, I will say it again - my hair is very loving. The strands love to just coil together and form little knots. So I need a conditioner that is great at detangling so that it does not break. The Coconut and Hibiscus Shea Moisture Conditioner does all that. Since the line does not have a deep conditioner, I chose to use Shea Moisture's Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow & Restore Treatment Masque. It's one of my favourite masques, and since I recently dyed my hair black, I need the added treatment using something that is colour safe - which the line claims to be. Before even steaming my hair with the treatment masque, I could feel it soften. I steamed for 30 minutes under a black scandal bag, and relied on my own body heat. I rinsed and was satisfied with the results. Soft - check. Moisturised - check.
I do not have low porosity hair, but I tried the shea moisture low porosity protein-free leave in detangler. Not going to lie, I was a sceptic about this. I could not picture this giving me any form of moisture. It looked like a gel. But it showed me. I got a lot of moisture and slip. Admittedly, not my favourite leave-in, but definitely a close second, and I tested it on my sister's hair which is low porosity and saw the benefits. It absorbed easily into her hair.
But then I was introduced to the holy grail of hair products - the one thing I would tell everyone who struggles with dull hair to get. The product that actually surprised me the most - The Coconut and Hibiscus, Hold and Shine Moisture Mist. I thought that it was water in a bottle and a total waste. But I tried it and now writing this three-four days after washing, and one day after filming my hair still shines. Never has this happened without reapplication of some kind or oil. So a 10 out of five I know that is impossible but that is how much I love this.
Finally, for my twist out, I used the Curl Enhancing Smoothie and the Curling Gel Souffle as a sealant. I used the mist at the end once more and let air dry. A very soft defined twist out. No disappointment even after sleeping off my satin scarf. Overall I highly recommend this line. IT is everything my hair needs and more. Overall the line gets 4.5 stars out of five from DIY Jo.
