Fit Your Way to Fabulous

It's that time again when we all make promises to do better for the new year. With resolutions already in full swing, Flair wanted to tackle the right approach when it comes to fitness.

We enlisted the expertise of Personal Fitness Coach AndrÈ Johnson to assist us in setting realistic goals and exceeding our limits when it comes to our health, so you can fit your way to fabulous.

According to Johnson, new year's resolutions are always a great catalyst for those who wish to start a new beginning. It's the end of a long year and the beginning of a new one. For many, health and fitness tend to be among the top on the list of things to improve upon in the new year.

But life, he says, tend to get in the way of fitness through work projects, children, school, social gatherings, family occasions, "From births to deaths, all are factors that can pull you away from your own personal goals," he added.

And because of the fast-paced lifestyles that so many tend to lead, they turn to fast food as their hunger fix. "Fast food is made with highly processed ingredients which are stripped of their nutritional value. These foods aren't really foods at all, they contain empty calories which ultimately will leave you feeling less satisfied shortly after and craving more food," Johnson said. Sounds familiar to you?

The whole purpose of food is to nourish and fuel the body, according to the personal fitness coach and with a strategic exercise plan as well as a designed meal schedule, you will be well on your way to losing those undesired pounds in no time. Johnson provided a few more tips that can carry you even closer:

1 Drink more water. Johnson shared that your body is composed of more than 60% water, your cells depend on adequate supply of hydration in order for optimal performance. Coffee, tea, soda, juice, energy drinks are all beverages which will actually dehydrate you. Drink at least two litres of water a day and see what does for you.

2 Eliminate TV from your hobbies. Johnson says TV is a distraction. Sitting down watching tv will drain your energy and pull you away further from your goals as you watch others on tv achieve theirs. The more you begin to quiet your mind and detach from distractions, the more you become aware of your body

3 Read more books. Try to find a self-development book. "self help" in his opinion are wonderful tools which can help motivate and inspire. Those who say self help books don't work probably didn't try long enough to practise the teachings taught by the author.

4 Wake up early. This sounds tricky already but Johnson advises that you set your alarm and get up. Don't turn on the tv, or go straight to your phone, drink some fresh squeezed lemon water, go for a walk, do some stretching and deep breathing. If you wake up at sunrise, try sungazing before the sun's rays are too strong - it relaxes both the mind and the body.

5 Take cold showers. Johnson declares that taking cold showers have many health benefits: They are great for your skin, support lymphatic circulation, increase blood circulation, improve mood, help with muscle repair, furthermore taking cold showers consistently can help break old habit.

6 Drink Cold Pressed Juice. Johnson recommends that you try a juice cleanse over the course of a weekend. By eliminating foods for a few days and drinking only vegetable pressed juices, you give your digestive system a break while continuing to deliver mass quantities of micronutrients. For many, a successful juice cleanse will even cause some weight loss.

7 Look up Dr Mercola food pyramid., Johnson declares. His food pyramid focuses on vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, healthy fats and some grains and is great for creating the ideal nutritional balance in your life.

8 Decrease your carbohydrate intake. We've heard this one before and Johnson's explains why it is the case. Carbohydrates when consumed, he says, break down into glucose - your body's fuel source. However for many, the amount of carbohydrates consumed and amount of glucose that is in one's body at any given time are not utilised entirely. Unused glucose gets stored in the body as fat.

9 Understand your body's metabolic rate - and by Johnson means the rate at which you exert calories. If you consume more calories than your body burns - fat retention will occur.

10. Enjoy the process - Johnson assets that nothing comes easy, weight management takes a long time, results may take longer than you would like to expect. That being said, healthy weight loss over the course of months to years will likely remain permanent rather than extreme weight loss through starving yourself. The weight will come back! Put together a short term goal (three month) then mid goal (six month) and long term (a year) if you can commit to your work the results will come.
