"With perseverance and endurance you can survive any storm.”

This sentiment from author Lailah Gifty resonates in the heart of health and wellness leader, Sharon Feanny.

Today, Flair Magazine shares her transformative journey into the wonderful world of health and fitness, which led her to discover the mind, body and soul connection through Shakti.

Feanny has been an active member of the wellness industry since she was 21 years old. After taking her first yoga class at the age of 14, the rest was history.

After landing her first job as spa director of San Souci hotel, she was inspired to branch out on her own. In 2001, she opened up her very own yoga studio, naming it Shakti Yoga Centre. Shakti, according to Feanny, means the light force in you. “Everybody has a light within them and I wanted to help people find their light.”

Five years in, she began going through financial difficulties. Faced with the option of going corporate or doing something different, she chose the latter.

“I decided to do spinning class and had one of the biggest yoga studios in Kingston. Yoga remained at the heart of everything that we did. We didn’t care about if you were rich or poor, black or white. We just wanted to create a place where everyone could come and feel welcome.”

In 2013, due to circumstances beyond her control, she closed Shakti.

SOMETHING MISSING

Following her relocation to Montego Bay, something was missing – and that something was Shakti.

Depressed and suffering through acid reflux, she had lost touch with her own light and made the decision then and there to try a 40-day detox. From there, she engaged in clean eating, coming off bad boys, sugar, alcohol, wheat, dairy and caffeine, while resuming her yoga in the process. She felt better and looked younger than ever. With that in mind, she took on a new challenge: carrying persons on a journey of transformation and helping them through yoga, meditation, healthy eating, inclusive of detox and self-care. She initiated the movement in her new city of residence, confessing that it wasn’t easy.

“I didn’t know anybody in Montego Bay, but I connected with who I did know, and got familiar with those I didn’t. I created a 21-day programme which assisted people who were overweight, going through divorce, addiction, depression; persons with chronic fatigue and menopause, along with those who just needed to reset their body mind and soul. The objective is to transform their lives though living a healthy lifestyle.”

Six years into the awakening journey, she has returned to Kingston. She has also put her culinary prowess to the test, cooking clean and healthy meals for her family. This progressed to her cooking and delivering clean and healthy snacks and dishes for door-to-door clients. Today, her products can be found in Loshusan Supermarket in Barbican. And her cookbook, Live Fit Kitchen: 100 Simple Recipes for Living Fit. Living life and Living Love, is coming out in December.

She also started an online programme – a seven-day yoga detox and self-care programme that you can do from the comfort of your home. She calls it online shakti activation, where you are able to activate their shakti. Feanny asked celebrity sisters Tessanne and Tami Chin to join the programme, and here is what they had to say:

“This was a brilliant experience for me. It was both so easy and accessible. I’m drinking my smoothie right now and thinking of all the positive changes I’m able to make after just a week of rejuvenating mind, body, spirit. I’ve heard it said that our guts are our second brain and it’s no joke. I feel super clear and focused. I’m very grateful and I’m looking forward to keeping this momentum going.” (Tami Chynn)

“I cannot even begin to tell you how much this programme has done for me, in more ways than I could’ve expected or imagined. I went into it thinking, ‘Okay, detox, great.’ If I’m being honest, I also said, ‘Maybe I’ll lose some weight.’ But I had no idea what was in store for me. It has unlocked something that has been so quiet and still within me and I feel as though I have woken up! I’m grateful for these tools, not just in delicious recipes, but in the assistance this programme has provided in reconnecting and becoming aware of what’s really happening on the inside, literally and figuratively. I am forever grateful to you, Sharon. P.S. I can no longer fall asleep with the television like I used to: I’ve tried.” (Tessanne Chin)
