Degreasing an oily face

Published:Monday | January 28, 2019 | 12:00 AM

A cool and refreshing look that remains all day is key, even for men. Yes, for ages we’ve been bothered by an oily face, and while women will experiment to fix this, some men won’t. But it’s easy, boys, and you can do it with a number of natural products. Georgia Gordon, co-owner of Natures Pure Oil and Cosmetics, has these tips for you.

“Men are always on the go but you should also try and take care of your skin the best way possible. After all, it’s the largest organ of your body. I heard this quote somewhere, and ‘a true complexion would be the crown of glory on a gentleman,’ and I truly believe this,” Gordon said.

Form a daily regime: Men with oily skin, especially, I recommend exfoliating a few times per week using an exfoliating cleanser or an exfoliating soap bar; this should be done in a circular motion. Doing this will remove excess oils, dead skin cells and also unblock your pores.

Know when to exfoliate: Do not use an exfoliator immediately after shaving. This will cause irritation. Apply a cream that is suitable for your skin type. A toner, too, will come in handy. It will close your pores after exfoliating.

Evening cleanse: You’ll also need master a technique to get the best results at nights. So, as soon as the sun goes down, you should wash your face with a soap bar or a moisturising face wash that is designed for oily or neutral skin. Again, you could use a toner, and this should be good enough for the night.

Best products: For oily skin, Gordon recommends products with activated charcoal. That’s because these can attract toxins and remove impurities from the skin. For example, oil, dirt and sweat, which will all come from the face.

She noted that coffee grounds are a mechanical exfoliate, as they can be used to scrub away dead skin cells and reveal new healthy skin. Chemical exfoliates, on the other hand, will remove skin cells with enzymes or acidic properties. Plus, exfoliating with coffee grounds improves circulation, leaving you with smooth, glowing skin.

Use turmeric-based items: The antibacterial properties of turmeric aid in acne treatment. And its anti-inflammatory properties treat the inflammation caused by pimples. Turmeric can be used for oily skin as a face wash or a face pack.

Always try to use natural products. Natural products moisturises the skin, but those containing chemicals will leave your skin dry and this will lead to premature ageing.

Don’t forget to moisturise: The most sensitive areas of your skin – the face, ears, neck, and chest – repair themselves more often than any other area on your skin. Therefore, moisturising can help give these areas the boost they need to sustain themselves and remain healthy.
