A Japanese hideaway in the middle of the Marketplace, offers patrons exactly what they've been hankering for - mouth-watering, Asian cuisine at reasonable prices.
After several years as a Restaurant Week participant, Chef Taka Utoguchi knows exactly what patrons want. "Jamaicans love sushi. People want to eat healthy, and sushi is for everyone," he told Food.
For diners who are new to sushi, East Japanese Restaurant has a picture menu that guides the uninitiated through the ingredients and flavours in each dish. For appetisers, patrons can choose from several options, including the delicious miso soup, which comprises tofu, seaweed and scallion, a small green salad, sesame-flavoured green seaweed salad or edamame (steamed soybeans).
In preparation for the Do Us A Flavour theme, Chef Taka chose the teriyaki chicken as the feature presentation. The dish, which consists of sautÈed chicken with teriyaki sauce and served with rice, is best described as a luscious combination of delightful texture and subtle flanks that create a bouquet of happiness in your mouth.
Along with the teriyaki chicken, the other main dishes include the shrimp tempura, (deep-fried shrimp and vegetables in tempura butter, served with ginger dipping sauce) and a five-piece sushi dish with salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, shrimp, served with California roll or a tekka roll.
Patrons do not have to learn the fine art of dining in the traditional Japanese style, as chairs and Western-style cutlery are available for local comfort.
"We've been open for 10 years. We're the oldest Japanese restaurant in Kingston. Sushi has become more familiar to the Jamaican palate over the years, and patrons can definitely expect great service and even better food at a good price," said Chef Taka.
In addition to the tantalising dishes, Chef Taka promises the perfect ambience.
"It's a lovely location with great customer service. When you dine here, you feel like family. You will definitely be satisfied."
