Tasty Jamaican rum cake Susie's style
Cathy Risden, Lifestyle Writer
From trial and error in her mother's kitchen, to operating her own business, Susie's Original Jamaica Rum Cake is baked fresh with no preservatives or additives at the bakery and coffee bar in St Andrew.
The traditionally home-made rum cake joined Susie's coffee, lunch and pastry menu in South dale Plaza 20 years ago. After experiencing her mother's fine baking, operator of the eatery, Susie Hanna started baking for social events, schools and special friends. It captured the palate of many, and the rest is history.
Rum with a combination of flour, sugar, butter, egg, milk, baking powder, salt, vanilla, and walnuts are all apart of Susie's Original Jamaican Rum Cake. Along with other recipes passed down from her grandmother and mother, Hanna tried them all before arriving at the perfect product. It resembles a plain, soft, golden-brown cake: "With just one bite, your senses are almost overcome by the strong, mellowed taste of classic Jamaica rum as it sparks your taste buds and makes you come alive. It has you. There's nothing left to do but take another bite," read a quote made by Hanna on the packaging.
A slight replica of an old-fashioned European coffee house, Susie's Bakery and Coffee Bar is known for its consistency, quality and the most sinfully, delectable, baked delicacies on this side of the world. The local and international market is making use of the opportunity. Susie receives numerous testimonies from her customers almost every week.
When you do what you love, especially when it has sentiments attached and it provides an income, you never feel like you are working a day in your life. This is so with Hanna. Her continuous joy of baking landed her Fine Baked Goods Ltd.
