Joy of Food
Kathryn Getton is a trained administrative officer working full time with a property management company. She enjoys her job but was just waiting for the perfect opportunity to pursue her passion for baking sweet treats.
Getton's mother, Yvonne Garrick now retired, had recently completed a cake-decorating course, and in between jobs, Getton's passion for the oven was reignited. "Mommy had just completed a cake decorating course, which I subsequently pursued as well, and we decided to see whether our passion and talent would be marketable. That's how Joy of Food was born," shared the mother of two.
Though Getton had a name in mind, when it came to naming her now-beaming talent, she wanted something else. "We went through a lot of names that would describe our love for what we do. Mommy and my daughter both have the same middle name - Joy - so we decided that would be the perfect choice," she shared with Food.
That was a year ago, and since then, Joy of Food is becoming a household name which is what the family-owned and operated business is all about. "Mommy's retired, so she does a lot of the baking in the day, and we do most of the decorating at night. Whenever we have large orders and special events, we also bake at nights. And our husbands do help out as well babysitting, clean-up, marketing, and deliveries are their key areas of responsibility. Organisation is key," Getton explained.
Though Joy of Food does custom cakes and pastries done to order, their fruit cake is definitely their best seller. "I would definitely have to say our fruit cake is a big hit! We won an award for best tasting cake at the inaugural wedding cake competition put on by With Ease Magazine last May," Getton revealed adding that it was the icing on the cake. Every item you receive from them is freshly-baked from scratch.
