Wine pairing in Mandeville
The cool of the evening blended perfectly with a backdrop of bright stars and scintillating music, setting the perfect mood for an extraordinary evening. Palate whetting with great food and opulent, silky smooth wines were the order of the day at the wine pairing hosted by Product Development Consultant extraordinaire, Debe-Ann Lange-Chen and Wines Category Manager at Caribbean Producers Jamaica (CPJ) Michael Turner.
On Friday January 15, aapproximately 42 guests, deemed good friends and winos, congregated on the spacious porch of the Chens? residence to experience for the first time in their hometown a seven course wine pairing meal.
Trinidadian by birth, Lange Chen has been in the catering and product consultancy business for several years with corporate clients such as Scotiabank, Sagicor, Kraft International, Caribbean producers Jamaica and Best Dressed Chicken. She caters for weddings, elite functions and more recently, Platinum patrons at the Shaggy and Friends concert.
Out of this passion for good wine and cooking, Lange- Chen decided to partner with CPJ and host this event for her close friends. She tells Food, ?This is something I wanted to do from last year and different things kept happening, but I am pleased it has finally happened ... the persons I have invited here tonight are persons who appreciate good wine and happen to be my friends?
With years of experience in wine tasting and pairing, after being pitched the idea, Turner did not hesitate at the opportunity to share his knowledge about wines and donating all the wines to be tasted. ?Wine and food is a marriage, it?s about complimenting each other and not contrasting ... I wanted persons to have unique experiences, so I didn?t bring everyday wines - I brought wines with a rich history and personal favourites to be discussed and explored together?
The evening?s appetisers included mini pastels, jerked chicken in plantain pockets, shrimp cocktail and conch fritters paired with one of Turner?s favourite wines, Mionetto Prosecco. The courses that followed included: a seafood me-Lange with crusty baguette paired with Josh Sauvignon Blanc, grilled lamb with a mint sauce on yam crisp with steamed vegetables paired with Francis Coppola ?Diamond Collection? Zinfandel.
The meal ended with a chocolate mousse, crepe suzette, icebox cake paired with Fetzer Riesling.
