Latest in glaucoma technology: iStent is here in Jamaica

Published:Wednesday | February 20, 2019 | 12:13 AM

Glaucoma is a chronic disease defined by characteristic optic nerve damage. Glaucoma is slowly progressive and is the world’s second-leading cause of blindness.

The iStent® trabecular micro-bypass stent is a surgical therapy for patients who have mild to moderate open angle glaucoma. It is designed to improve the aqueous outflow to better lower the intraocular pressure and reduce the need for glaucoma drops.

Ophthalmologist Dr Maynard McIntosh of Ophthalmic Suites Jamaica Limited will be the first in the Caribbean to perform this surgical procedure.

The iStent device is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and Jamaica’s Ministry of Health.
