OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN on health, Dr Kenneth Baugh, is concerned that the number of chikungunya cases in Jamaica may be under-reported.

"The numbers being quoted by the Ministry of Health are not credible," Baugh stressed in a news release yesterday.

"Many more people are being affected by this illness and are not being recorded and these low numbers could lull people into a false sense of security," he added.

He is proposing that the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Health work together to create more public awareness about the spread of the disease and put into place vector-control methods.

"This is a very serious situation, and even with health practitioners warning of the impending increase in the rates of infection, there is still a garbage problem in many areas of the country and many areas where mosquitoes can find fertile breeding grounds."
