TAJ names delinquent taxpayers
Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has published a list of individuals and companies it says owe the Government more than $1.1 billion in taxes.
According to the TAJ, the arrears cover income, pay as you earn, property and education taxes as well as General Consumption Tax.
An advertisement published in yesterday?s Gleaner shows that the more than 100 ?delinquent? individuals and companies are located in St Andrew, Montego Bay and Mandeville.
It shows that those in Montego Bay accounted for the highest arrears with $890 million owed to the Government.
Mandeville was next with $249 million, while those in St Andrew owe a total of $4 million.
In a statement this morning, TAJ said the listed individuals and companies were brought before the court in July and August, after other attempts to collect the outstanding taxes failed.
In addition, TAJ said it has already secured a court order against those listed in the advertisement for failure to file tax returns and make payments.
The agency has warned that its compliance officers will be stepping up their enforcement activities islandwide, and urged other delinquent taxpayers to come forward and settle their arrears.
